Kielder Sky Space Structure

Project: Kielder Sky Space Structure
Client: Tyneside Council/Forest Enterprises
Value: £250,000
Location: Kielder

G & B Civil Engineering Ltd working as Principal Contractor constructed the Sky Space at Kielder for Tyneside Council / Forest Enterprises.
Based on the requirements of American artist, James Turrell, the 7m deep by 7m diameter smooth finished cylindrical structure with a 3m diameter stainless steel opening in the roof is used to view the night sky.
To gain access there is a 2.1m diameter tunnel opening into an area at the base with P.C.C. seating units.
Internally background lighting is provided by wind and stored solar powered lighting.  Externally the land was landscaped and the structure clad from locally reclaimed stone to match the surroundings.
The remoteness of the site meant that scheduling of materials and plant had to be carefully planned.
