Project: Skinningrove Coastal Protection Works Beck Widening and Training
Client: Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council
Due to repeated flooding of the village of Skinningrove near Whitby, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council undertook investigation works. It was determined that since the existing surface water drainage discharged into the beck an increased capacity was required, specifically where the beck joined the sea.
This capacity was provided by beck training works, involving removing existing rock armour revetment, widening the bed width from four to fifteen metres and replacing the rock armour.
The proposed slope of the new revetments was shallower and required the import of approximately 5000t of additional rock armour.
Also to prevent storm wave action into the new wider channel a small spur comprising of a further 1500t of 1.5t stones was required.
During the course of the works a concrete boat ramp was instructed and installed at the request of the local inshore fishing operators.
